Paving in Plant City
Asphalt paving in Plant City covers town homes, farm properties and busy commercial lots along Interstate 4. Plant City is known as the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World and hosts the Florida Strawberry Festival every late winter. It is also one of the few incorporated cities in our area, which means permits and right-of-way rules come from the city rather than the county.
History in the name
The town began as Ichepuckesassa, after a Native American village, was renamed Cork in 1860, and then Plant City in honor of railroad developer Henry B. Plant and his South Florida Railroad. It was incorporated as a town on January 10, 1885, and reincorporated as a city in 1911. Many people assume the name refers to plant nurseries; it does not.
Higher ground
Plant City sits at about 128 feet above sea level, higher than most of Hillsborough County. Drainage is generally better than near the bay, but sloped lots can send runoff across driveways fast enough to erode edges. We shape the surface to control where water leaves.
Size and roads
The 2020 census counted 39,764 residents and 14,627 housing units on about 28 square miles of land. Interstate 4 runs through the north side with exits 17 through 25, 12 miles east to Lakeland and 23 miles west to Tampa. State Road 39 crosses US 92 in the city center.
Farm properties
Strawberry farms, packing houses and agricultural businesses need lanes and yards that hold up to trucks, forklifts and equipment during harvest. We build those with a thicker base and asphalt section, crown lanes to shed water, and schedule work outside the busiest weeks of the season.
Commercial lots
Lots near the I-4 exits and along US 92 and SR 39 carry heavy traffic. Failed entrances and travel lanes are rebuilt to full depth, everything else is overlaid or sealed, and the new paint meets ADA layout rules, all phased so customers can still pull in.
City permits
As an incorporated city, Plant City handles its own permits and right-of-way rules. We confirm the city's requirements for your address before scheduling.
Common jobs
- Driveway replacement and widening
- Farm lanes and packing-house yards
- Commercial lots near I-4
- Sealcoating and crack filling
Older neighborhoods
Close to downtown, Plant City's older blocks mean narrow lots, big trees and drives carrying decades of patches. We remove failing pavement, deal with roots carefully and rebuild on a compacted base.
Maintenance for farms and businesses
Crack sealing before the rainy season and sealcoating every few years keep farm lanes and commercial lots in good shape. We can set up a schedule that avoids harvest and festival season.
Rough costs
For budgeting, HomeGuide's nationwide figures run about $5 to $12-plus per square foot for new pavement and $1 to $2 for a sealcoat. HomeAdvisor's commercial range is $2-$4.50 a square foot.
Strawberry Festival season
The Florida Strawberry Festival brings heavy traffic to Plant City in late winter. For businesses that depend on festival visitors, we schedule lot work well before or after the festival so parking is ready when customers arrive. For farms, we work around harvest.
Downtown access
Narrow downtown streets near SR 39 and US 92 call for smaller equipment, careful staging and work outside peak business hours.
