Paving Beside the Canals

Asphalt paving in Apollo Beach takes place on some of the lowest ground in our service area. The community's official elevation is 7 feet, and about 55 miles of canals lead from its neighborhoods out to Tampa Bay. Driveways here have to shed water quickly without sending it toward the house, and the ground under them can be soft when the water table is high.

A community planned around water

The Dickman family owned the land from 1923, and Paul Dickman conceived a waterfront community in the 1930s. In the early 1950s, three New York men bought the land and called it Tampa Beach. Francis Corr bought it in 1957 and renamed it La Vida Beach, and the name Apollo Beach came in 1958. Developers started digging the Flamingo Canal near US 41 but could not reach Tampa Bay and gave up in 1956; later work produced today's canal network.

The power plant on the bay

The Flora Sun Corporation, which bought the land in the early 1960s, sold acreage on the community's northern border to Tampa Electric for a power plant. That site is now the Big Bend Power Station, visible across Tampa Bay.

Growth

The 2020 census counted 26,002 residents and 11,100 housing units on about 19.7 square miles of land. US 41 crosses the center of the community, and I-75 passes through the eastern portion, with access from Exit 246 at the northern edge. Newer neighborhoods east of US 41 have HOA streets and amenity lots; older canal-side streets have homes from earlier decades.

Low ground, careful grading

On canal lots, we set the driveway's finished height so it meets the garage and walks flush, slopes toward the street, and does not push water toward the house or seawall. If the existing driveway has settled into a low spot, we rebuild the base before paving rather than trying to fix it with an overlay.

Sandy soils near the bay can be soft when saturated. A compacted base of crushed stone or limerock gives the asphalt a firm platform that does not shift with the water table.

Salt air and sun

Bayfront exposure means more sun and salt air than inland. Once cured, a sealcoat on a two-to-three-year rhythm stops the bay-front drying and stone loss.

County authority

Apollo Beach is unincorporated Hillsborough County. We confirm the county's requirements for any work in the right-of-way, and your HOA's rules where they apply.

HOA streets near the water

Community streets in Apollo Beach often drain to inlets that lead to the canals. Those inlets are the first place pavement fails, as water saturates the base beside them. We rebuild around failed inlets and mill gutters before overlays so the inlets keep working.

Edges on canal lots

Where driveways meet lawns that slope toward the water, edges can be undercut by runoff. We compact the base wider than the paved edge and finish it so it is supported.

Budget numbers

HomeGuide's countrywide data puts fresh blacktop around five to twelve dollars and up a square foot, and sealer at one to two. We turn that into your number on site.

Ask about pairing a sealcoat with edge repair on the same visit.

Apollo Beach Questions

Will a new driveway send water toward my seawall?

Not if it is graded properly. We slope the drive toward the street and keep runoff away from the house and the water.

Is the ground near the canals soft?

It can be when the water table is high. A compacted stone or limerock base gives the asphalt firm support.

How often should a bayside driveway be sealed?

Every two to three years is typical with the extra sun and salt air.

Do you work in the newer HOA neighborhoods east of US 41?

Yes. We prepare HOA submittals and handle community streets and amenity lots there.

Can you pave near a seawall?

Yes. We keep equipment back from the wall, grade runoff toward the street and avoid adding weight or water at the wall itself.
