Paving in Balm
Asphalt paving in Balm reflects an area in transition. Balm's economy has long been agricultural, especially citrus, and it is home to the University of Florida's Gulf Coast Research and Education Center, which moved to Balm in 2005 and runs tomato breeding and hops research. At the same time, new neighborhoods are filling in nearby land. Both need pavement.
A railroad stop that grew
A post office opened in 1902 under the name Doric and was renamed Balm the following month. The Seaboard Air Line Railway first made Balm a flag stop, then built a one-room station and water tank. By 1911 there was a blacksmith, sawmills, a teacher and a general store. Electricity arrived in 1937, and by 1945 the population passed one thousand.
Today
The 2020 census counted 6,541 residents and 2,164 housing units on about 10 square miles of land, at an elevation of about 98 feet. US 301 forms Balm's western border, running 12 miles north to the eastern outskirts of Tampa and 28 miles southwest to Bradenton.
Farm lanes and yards
Farm properties need lanes and yards that hold up to trucks and equipment. We build them with a deep compacted base, a thicker asphalt section where loads concentrate, and a crowned surface that sheds water. Long lanes can be paved in phases.
Rural drives
Larger residential lots often have long shell or dirt drives. We regrade and compact sound material, rebuild soft spots with stone and pave. Recycled asphalt is a lower-cost option for very long drives.
New neighborhoods
In newer subdivisions, the requests are widening, parking pads, sealing and HOA submittals.
County authority
Balm is unincorporated Hillsborough County. We confirm county requirements before work at any public road, including US 301.
Common jobs
- Farm lanes and equipment yards
- Rural drive conversions
- New-subdivision widening and sealing
- Repairs on existing drives
Drainage on open land
Open fields let water sheet across a property during summer storms. Drives and lanes need to sit above the surrounding ground, with a crown and clear ditches. We build the grade up with compacted base and shape it so water moves off quickly.
Cost guide
HomeGuide's U.S. averages: new asphalt $5-$12+ per square foot, sealcoat $1-$2. Local site conditions decide the rest. Recycled asphalt, near $4-$9 a foot per HomeGuide, can trim a long lane.
Maintenance
Crack filling before the rainy season and sealing every few years keep a paved lane from breaking up. We can quote maintenance for the whole lane or just the busiest section.
New neighborhoods, new pavement
As subdivisions spread into the Balm area, builders put in driveways quickly. Some will need attention within a few years: edges that crack, spots that settle where fill was not compacted, and surfaces that fade without sealing. Early crack filling and a first sealcoat after the asphalt cures prevent most of those problems from growing. For HOA communities, we can survey streets and amenity lots and set up a maintenance plan from the start.
