Paving in Lithia

Asphalt paving in Lithia often means long drives on rural acreage. Lithia stretches from the Alafia River lowlands to higher ground in the south, and its elevation ranges from less than 8 feet at Lithia Springs to about 105 feet south of the post office. Those differences change how water moves on a property and how a driveway needs to be built.

Named for a spring

Around 1900, lithium was found in a spring now known as Lithia Spring Major, and the community took its name from it. Hillsborough County describes Lithia Springs as one of the largest natural springs in Florida.

Early settlement

Native American tribes lived in the area before European settlers arrived in 1846 and 1847, many of them from Georgia. In 1848, James Alderman created a ford on the Alafia River at what is now Alderman's Ford Park. Over the years the local economy included agriculture, sawmills and phosphate mining.

Preserves and open land

Large areas around Lithia are protected, including the 2,963-acre Alafia River Corridor and the 5,515-acre Chito Branch Reserve. Many homes sit on acreage near these preserves, with long private drives.

Paving long drives

On a long drive, we check the existing surface, whether shell, gravel or dirt, and regrade and compact what is sound. Soft or washed-out sections are dug out and rebuilt with stone. We crown the surface so water sheds to both sides, then pave. When the whole run is more than this year's budget, the stretch by the house goes first, ending in a square, sealed joint for the next round.

Slopes and runoff

On the higher ground, sloped drives can carry water fast enough to wash out edges. Near the river, low ground can stay wet. We shape the surface for each situation and make sure ditches or swales can carry water away. Runoff from new pavement should not head into a preserve or the river unchecked.

County authority

Lithia is unincorporated Hillsborough County. We confirm county requirements for work at any public road.

Common jobs

  • Long driveway paving and shell conversions
  • Turnarounds and parking areas on acreage
  • Repairs and sealing on existing drives
  • Driveways in newer subdivisions near FishHawk

Newer neighborhoods

Not all of Lithia is acreage. Newer subdivisions near FishHawk have HOA streets and standard driveways. For those, we handle widening, pads, sealing and HOA submittals.

Gates and culverts

Rural properties often have gates set back from the road and culverts where the drive crosses the roadside ditch. We pave through gate areas with room for tracks or sensors, and check that culverts are clear and sized for the water they carry.

Budget numbers

HomeGuide's countrywide data puts fresh blacktop around five to twelve dollars and up a square foot, and sealer at one to two. We turn that into your number on site. Recycled asphalt, near $4-$9 a foot per HomeGuide, can trim a long lane.

Maintenance

Once paved, a long drive needs crack filling and sealing every few years to keep water out of the base.

Close to Riverview

Lithia Questions

Can you pave a long drive in stages?

Yes. We pave the most important section first and leave a clean edge so the next phase ties in.

My sloped drive washes out after storms. What helps?

Shaping the surface so water leaves at controlled points and supporting the edges. Paving with a crown helps a lot.

Do you work near the preserves?

Yes. We keep runoff and sediment controlled so it does not head into protected land.

How long does it take to pave a long drive?

It depends on length and base work. Many rural drives take two to four days, sometimes longer if a lot of base needs to be added.

Should my driveway be crowned?

On long rural drives, yes. A crown sends water off both sides instead of down the middle.
